Quinta da Lixa, producers of Pouco Comum Alvarinho, is one of six estates in a small co-op of producers in the Minho region. The co-op, Sociedade Agricola, has been run by the Meireles family since 1986. At first the wines were sold in bulk, but their popularity and quality were so high that the only choice was to estate bottle them. Between all six estates Sociedade Agricola operates 42 hectares of vineyards.
Quinta da Lixa is situated in an orographic microclimate, which means the vinyeard enjoys its own unique climate due to the arrangement of the surrounding peaks and valleys. For the vines this means more sunshine and lower rainfall during the growing season and a moderate mean annual temperature. This mountainous terrain was formed by the movement of glaciers, which has had a direct impact on the terroir of Quinta da Lixa. Their vineyards are situated on alluvial deposits of granite striated by bands of schist. This imparts a higher acidity and a spice characteristic to the wines. This unique combination of climate and terroir allows Quinta da Lixa to produce the well balanced, high quality to price ratio wines that Portugal is known for.
