Kopke has been producing port since 1638 and, not surprisingly, is the oldest Port House in the world. Kopke port is made by renowned Port winemaker Fernando Oliveira. Oliveira has achieved master status at a young age and it speaks highly of his skill that a renowned house such as Kopke maintains his services for their precious aged Ports, some of which are over 100 years old. Although, it does help that Oliveira comes from a long line of Port winemakers.

Although Kopke is known for their outstanding Colheita Ports, they also makes high quality still wines. Their winemaker, Fransisco Goncalves, is an outstanding young winemaker and highly rated around the Iberian peninsula. In order to make world-class wines that maintain the local characteristics the Douro, Kopke brought in Fransisco to specialize in still wines that are distinctly separate from their Port wines. Fransisco’s grapes come from Quinta Sao Luiz in the Upper Corgo region of the Douro, as well as Quinta Arnozelo in the Douro proper. These vineyards are terraced at higher elevations between, 750 to 1500 feet. This allows the grapes to produce the more balanced acidity for still wines.
