Casa Santos Lima is a family-owned winery in the Lisboa wine region near Lisbon, Portugal. The current manager of the estate, Jose Luis Santos Oliveira da Silva, is the great-grandson of found Joaquim Santos Lima. They are the largest producer in the Lisboa region, operating 200 hectares of vineyards and producing 3 million bottles annually.
Jose Luis and his wines have been recognized as some of the best values available, both in Portugal and abroad. Casa Santos Lima has received the most “Best Buys” accolades from the Portuguese press and other international publications. In 2010 and 2011 their wines were awarded 23 gold medals and 73 silver medals from numerous competitions including, International Wine Challenge, San Francisco International Wine Challenge, Challenge International du Vin, Vinalies Internationales, Concours Mondiale de Bruxelles, and the Austrian Wine Challenge, among others.
Casa Santos Lima’s vineyards are located on gentle hillsides between 110 and 220 meters above sea level. With the Atlantic Ocean less than 25km away, constant sea-breezes bring in a steady flow of cool air which helps to regulate the growing conditions. The soils are predominantly clay and limestone. The farmers at Casa Santos Lima are constantly finding prehistoric marine-life fossils and have even found dinosaur bones on their grounds (talk about terroir). At each vineyard site sustainable agriculture systems have been implemented to prevent soil erosion, natural yield reduction and earlier maturation, all of which are important elements for protecting the environment and producing quality grapes.
