Valle Pradinhos

Valle Pradinhos began making wine in a remote eastern corner of Portugal, the Tras-os-Montes DOC, which means “Behind the Mountains”, in 1913.  Although they operate a 400 hectare estate, only 40 hectares are planted with vines.  The rest of the property is dedicated to cork forests, undeveloped land, and olive groves and orchards.  It is not uncommon to see goats and wild boar roaming the grounds.

The estate is located on a flat plateau about 600 meters above sea level.  The soil is thin and composed of schist and quartz, with layers of clay that allow for even distribution of water to the vines and limit hydraulic stress during maturation.  This composition of soils, combined with the hot days and cool nights of the region, allows for Valle Pradinho’s grapes to develop an interesting balance between color, structure, aroma and acidity.  Valle Pradinhos employs an Integrated Production Policy, which is one step below certified organic, and all of their grapes are harvested by hand.

Valle Pradinhos has always had a unique approach to winemaking.  Inspired by the best French wines, this influence can be seen in their approach to viticulture.  They have produced some outstanding and unique blends that are balanced and elegant, combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer with native Portuguese varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, and Malvasia Fina.
